Assistive Technology & Equipment Services in Hong Kong

Assistive technology and equipment can support communication, mobility, learning, self-care or access to daily activities. A useful match depends on the person's goals, environment, training needs, maintenance and funding; a product name alone does not establish suitability.

The directory listings below are a starting point for enquiries, not endorsements or a guarantee of availability. Confirm current services, eligibility, fees and application details directly with each provider.

Common ways support is delivered

  • Identify the task and environment

A person or team may consider what the user wants to do, where the tool will be used and what barriers it should address.

  • Trial and customization

Depending on the item, a provider may demonstrate, fit, configure or trial equipment before a decision is made.

  • Training and maintenance

Successful use may require instruction, technical support, repairs, replacement planning or data-privacy checks.

A guide to the process

What the process may involve

  1. 1Describe the goal and the settings where the technology will be used.
  2. 2Ask who can assess, demonstrate or fit the equipment and whether a trial is possible.
  3. 3Confirm training, repair, replacement, funding, data privacy and total ongoing costs.

Time and commitment

Assessment and setup time depend on the device, fitting and training needs; there is no universal timeframe. Ask about trial length, delivery lead time, training sessions, maintenance and replacement.

Hong Kong service pathways

Equipment may be accessed through rehabilitation services, specialist assessment or a provider. SWD's Integrated Community Rehabilitation Centre describes equipment application and rental as part of its service; SWD's Central Fund for Personal Computers is a narrow, criteria-based pathway and is not a general device subsidy. Confirm suitability and eligibility before purchase.

How it differs from related support

Equipment provision is not itself therapy. Some schemes lend or subsidise products through service providers; eligibility and availability should be checked with the administering scheme.

Points to consider

  • Ask whether an assessment, trial or fitting is available before purchase.
  • Clarify training, repairs, replacement, data privacy and total ongoing cost.

Questions to ask a provider

  • Who can assess and recommend the equipment?
  • Can I try it in the setting where it will be used?
  • Who handles training, maintenance and costs?
