Carer support may include information, emotional support, skills sessions, peer groups, practical assistance or help navigating services. What is available depends on the organisation and the caregiver's circumstances; asking for support is not a commitment to a particular care arrangement.
The directory listings below are a starting point for enquiries, not endorsements or a guarantee of availability. Confirm current services, eligibility, fees and application details directly with each provider.
Service guide
Understand this service
Explore common approaches, what to expect, time commitments, and questions to ask a provider.
A worker may explain service options, application steps or where to seek further information.
Emotional or practical support
Depending on the programme, caregivers may access individual conversations, skills sessions or help with day-to-day planning.
Groups and peer connection
Some services bring caregivers together for mutual support; ask about group purpose, confidentiality and accessibility.
A guide to the process
What the process may involve
1Explain what would make caregiving more manageable for you.
2Ask whether support is confidential and whether family members may participate.
3Agree a suitable format, language, contact route and what to do if needs change.
Time and commitment
There is no standard duration for individual carer-support contacts. SWD's Designated Hotline for Carer Support (182 183) operates 24 hours a day; that describes when the hotline is available, not a counselling session length. Ask the service about follow-up and urgent support.
Hong Kong service pathways
SWD's 182 183 hotline provides free information, emotional support, needs assessment and referral to carers, including carers of persons with disabilities. It offers a 24-hour phone service and WhatsApp text support for carers with hearing or speech impairments; other carer schemes have separate criteria.
How it differs from related support
Carer support is directed to the caregiver and family context; it is different from direct therapy for the person receiving care, though both may be coordinated.
Points to consider
Explain what would make day-to-day care more manageable for you.
Ask about confidential support, eligibility, language and whether family members can join.
Questions to ask a provider

How can I check Carer & Family Support listing details?
Review the listed source, then contact the provider to confirm its current address, services, fees and capacity.
Does a listing mean a provider has an open place?
No. The directory is a starting point for enquiries and does not confirm that applications are open or capacity is available. Ask the provider directly about its current waiting time and application process.
Do I need a referral or meet specific eligibility rules?
Requirements depend on the service and funding scheme. Confirm assessment, referral documentation, age and other eligibility criteria with the provider or administering public body.
What should I do if information is incorrect or out of date?
Confirm the current details with the provider, then use the “Suggest a correction” link on its profile to submit a verifiable update for review.
